- <p> DIED. Rufino Tamayo, 91, prolific Mexican painter and
- muralist; in Mexico City. Inspired by the work of Jackson Pollock
- and Pablo Picasso, Tamayo employed earthy colors and surrealistic
- images that blended his Zapotec Indian origins and Mexican folk
- art. His subjects ranged from animals and fruit in still lifes
- to play and dance in elaborate outdoor scenes. Along with Diego
- Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, Tamayo
- brought international attention to 20th century Mexican art.
